For coil nails, buyers often focus on nail diameter, length, point type and surface treatment, while the nail head receives less attention. However, the head is a critical part of the nail. Its design can affect holding performance, driving results, surface appearance and compatibility with the nail gun.
The main function of a nail head is to prevent the nail from being driven completely through the material and to transfer the clamping force from the nail to the wood surface.
The goal is therefore not simply to make the head as large as possible. A good head design balances holding power, driving performance and tool compatibility.
For nails with the same diameter and length, changing the head diameter changes the contact area between the head and the wood.
However, a larger head is not automatically better. If the head is oversized or incorrectly formed, it may interfere with the nail gun’s driver or feeding system. This is why professional coil nail production requires the head dimensions to be controlled within a consistent tolerance rather than simply maximizing head size.
The diameter alone does not determine head quality.
For high-speed coil nailers, nails are continuously fed and driven at high speed. Consistent head formation helps reduce feeding and driving problems and contributes to stable performance.
The nail point gets most of the attention because it enters the wood, but the head also interacts directly with the nail gun’s driving system.
Therefore, when changing to a different nail supplier, it is important to check not only the nail length and diameter but also the head dimensions and collation specifications.
Wood species, density and moisture content can significantly affect how a nail head behaves during driving.
The nail head is also related to the collation process. Coil nails are not loose nails; they are assembled at a specific angle and pitch for continuous feeding through a pneumatic nailer.
A practical quality check should go beyond simply measuring head diameter with a caliper.
For industrial coil nails, a good head is not necessarily the largest or thickest one. It should be dimensionally consistent, properly formed, well matched with the shank, compatible with the nail gun and capable of delivering stable driving and fastening performance.
Good coil nail performance comes from the consistency of the whole nail—not from one specification alone.
